The following letter from Colonel Marshal An derson, decliningtbe nomination of Stale-elector on the Ohio Pemcc atic State ticket, we find pnb lished in the Coram bos Crisis. Colonel Anderson is a brother to General Robert Anderson, of Fort - Sumter notoriety. We commend turn's letter to the careful pcrnsal of all our readers : j . Seven Oaks, April 24, ISC t. Dear Colonel : I asfc,. permission, through yonr column?, to withdraw my name as a candi date for Presidential elector in jhe 1 2th Congres sional district of Ohio. There may bo a-secmin,nnfitnefs in selection rour paper asa medium of publication, but I hope by a few words to explain and justify my coursed i - . ' . I do not accept the nomination for one or two reasons either I did not Understand the opinions . of my nominator?, or they did not understand1 mine. It is not my wish or intention to deceive or to deceived. I want every voter to know that I am diamotrically opposed to the continuance of this war. I will not and cannot consent to advocate and sustain any man, bo he soldier or civilian, whuL is in favor of its prosecution. 1 now fully realize and comprehend tbe meaning of the term " her rida Delia." Now that "rampant war baa yoked he red dragons to. her iron car,"' now that all humanity," all magnanimity, is trampled under feet, I feel its full force. Does the example of that lteathen leader teach us noth in? : He passed through an enemy's country aud left friends behiqd. f Carthagenians and Romans met in batfle, but neither waged a war of desola tion on women and children. ; Kindness, cor?sid- "efation and manly forbearance marked his course. Oar warriors silence the cries of hunger with stone?, and enlighten the very darkness of distress with fiery fagoU. In very truth this war is carried on in such a brutal and barbarous manner, it h so disgriccfnl to the Government, bo degrading to the wldiery, that it is surprising no new rocabu ' lary has been invented tJ explain the terms oi our advanced, much improved civilization. Jt is easier to declare what we should do,i than to by down an unchangeable law for Our future conduct. To rae, it is very clear tWit Democrats should never sacrifice principle to popularity -p-better suffer de feat, contending fojr the rigrarfd principle of freemen, than ohtiia success By fraud aiid falser hood. In one case, sustained by a vigorous vitality, we should rise fresh and strong; in the other, after tottering: along with uncertain step, we would faint and fill from oar own weakness and corruption. MARSHALL ANDERSON. . : . m - - SUGAR FROM ORGHipi, We mentioned some days "ago, says the Rich mond Sc?itinel, that a sample of syrup of Sorghum had been left with us hy Dr., Coats, of Henrico county, in which there was a largo deposit of m gar, the rcsolt of the gradual evaporation - of the syrup. We have now, through the same, gentle man; a specimen of a- clear, dry, well I flavored sugar, of rich, bright color, obtained from a mere straining and drying from jhe syrup, above refer ed to. . The fjfet that so excellent an article of-sugar can Dejnado irdm sorgbum is of great interest to our people. Every farmer can now render him ?elf independent of the high prices of the. grocer, by producing hb ownjsugar." It has long been de nied that sugar can be obtained from the sor ghum AhaJl; and we believe tLat all the experts ments heretofore ma.de have failed of that object. It will be an aectptable Service, therefore, to pub lish thtJ process by which it Acts been made, as the specimen before us attests; aod our cotemporaries who may feci an interest in spreiding the infor mation, may clo so id the perfect coafidence.that it comes Irom a source of the 'highest respectability. Wl.: j: ; 'Lu - a t xms u recovery is au acciucnc, anu was maae oy one of Dr. Coats' neighbors, a practical man, unacquainted with the theories of the books or the experiments of others. In last October he' boiled the juice of his sorghum for three hours, in a wide moutnea Doner, jie toos'tnc molasses thna obtained and put it away, intending to use it a3 such. It chanced that it was put into a vessel with a wideacd open top a stoncjarj1 or a common churn, we are not sure which." A thin cotton cloth was tied oyer the top, as a protection.- A few weeks ago, on examining the syrnp, it was discov ered that a large deposit of sugar had been made; tbe result, doubtless, of the slow evaporation-al lowed by the cotton cloth; This was taken "bot, tied in a cloth, and allowed to drip, and was then dried, and the result was the sugar before" us. : - ' ' Whatimproyeraent can be discovered upon this mode ;of obtaining '&igar. from sorghum remains to be seen. But it is a great point gained to know that sugar may thus be made and made so im ply. - The expeiimcnts heretofore instituted have, we believe, all relied, oa rapid boiling." Thi3 ob tains ho sugar, but simply converts the syrup into a black, bitter stuff, fit for nothing. The failure of the rapid process and the suecess 6T the slow, both point togenteel evaporation, as indispensable. Whether it may not be hastened by the applica? tion of a moderate heat, and how far this may be advantageously done, are points, to be investigated. With time and patience he process, rs wsee, is extremely simple. We doubt not that by. proper investigation and pains a mode of expediting the transformation will be readily discovered. Thq-j I its established by the discovery we have descnb d will serve is guides to further inquiries. ; ANNOUNCEMENTS; To the Voters of Bertie Countv : i.
